On Michael Chabon and purchasing a book solely for its cover:
A couple of days ago, I bought Michael Chabon’s new and first collection of non-fiction essays. Now though I enjoy Chabon’s writing (I found The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay more than a pleasure to read), I admit that Maps and Legends was purely an impulse purchase based solely on how beautiful I thought its cover was. Well, not solely. After all, Chabon’s writing is generally nothing to sneeze at. But even before I cracked open the cover, I grabbed myself a copy and headed to the check out line.
You got to admit, it’s a pretty nice looking cover:

Mmmm. Puuur-ty. Now, as soon as I finish ogling it, I think I just might read it.

Comment by Angus Miranda April 19, 2008 @ 9:23 amI don’t have to buy it its cover, after I read your post.
Comment by Arefe April 19, 2008 @ 10:06 amI’ve been know to purchase a book for the very same reason! It’s really quite beautiful. Hopefully, it’ll be good reading, as well.

Comment by Brandon April 22, 2008 @ 6:53 pmamazing cover. let us know if his non-fiction is as good as his fiction – not that I’ve read anything by him yet….he’s on my TBR pile…
Comment by Susan April 22, 2008 @ 11:01 pmI love Chabon, but I bought this one for its cover. Did you find copies in the store that were already unwrapped? All the ones I saw were tightly sealed.
Comment by SFP April 23, 2008 @ 5:44 amAngus Miranda, if you ever manage to find a copy I think it’ll be well worth a read. I thought the writing was superb.
Arefe, the cover is even better looking in person. The picture just doesn’t do it justice.
Comment by J.S. Peyton April 23, 2008 @ 10:46 amLisa, here’s keeping my fingers crossed that the content lives up to its cover. I’ll keep you posted.
Chartroose, I’ve dipped into it but haven’t really gone further than a surface read. I want to clean up my currently reading list a bit first. (I know I always say that.)
Brandon, FRANZO-OOOONE!
Comment by J.S. Peyton April 23, 2008 @ 10:49 amSusan, when you get around to reading him, I’d recommend THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY, but you know I may have heard a few great things about THE YIDDISH POLICEMAN’S UNION, too.
SFP, all of the copies in my bookstore were unwrapped. Maybe one of the associates screwed up and unwrapped them when they weren’t supposed to. I’m glad they weren’t, though. How else am I supposed to manhandle my books before I buy them?
Comment by J.S. Peyton April 23, 2008 @ 10:54 amOh, yes, an absolutely magnificent cover. One no book slut could possibly pass by.
Comment by Emily April 27, 2008 @ 12:11 pm[...] post from BiblioAddict about buying a book for its cover. It’s saying basically what I was going to say about Michael Chabon’s Maps and Legends. [...]
