Well, I have finally returned from my much needed, very refreshing vacation during which I ate a lot of food that I didn’t cook, relaxed and laughed with family, and – naturally – read. And read. And read. I finished John Connolly’s NOCTURNES, started 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS by Joe Hill, devoured most of THE SCRIBNER ANTHOLOGY OF CONTEMPORARY SHORT FICTION, and bought both the THE PARIS REVIEW BOOK for Planes. Trains. Elevators. And Waiting Rooms and HEYDAY by Kurt Andersen.
Commentary on NOCTURNES and WORLD WAR Z (see, I didn’t forget) is forthcoming. Both of these were amazing books and I’ve gotta say that, though I’m only 2 stories into Hill’s 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS, I think I enjoyed NOCTURNES more. There’s something about Connolly’s poetic and quietly chilling way of writing that I find a bit more compelling than Hill’s. But I admit it’s really too soon to make a fair comparison and I have the feeling that Connolly and Hill are out to accomplish two different things through their stories and method of writing.
In other news, since I’ve been back I’ve added a couple of books to my bibliocovets list: IN DEFENSE OF FOOD: AN EATERS MANIFESTO by Michael Pollan (I know, I know – I haven’t finished OMNIVORE’S DILEMMA yet, but I will) and LISTENING IS AN ACT OF LOVE by Dave Isay.
Sigh. There. It’s good to be back.

I gave a friend World War Z for Christmas, he’s already half way through it and really enjoying it, as I knew he would. I recently added a Michael Pollan book to my own covet list but it’s an older one called A Place of My Own which is about him building his own house.

Comment by Lisa January 7, 2008 @ 12:12 pmMatt, that Michael Pollan book sounds great too. There’s another one for the TBR pile. I’ve been trying to pawn off my WORLD WAR Z onto my biblioguy, but he refuses to believe me when I say that he’d love this book even though he’s not really into horror. Maybe when he’s laid up with the cold I gave him he’ll succumb to my powers of persuasion.
Thanks, Lisa! It’s good to be back. I never really know how much I like posting until I’m away. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder.
