The NY Times has listed its 10 Best Books of the Year. There were so many extraordinary books released this year, I wonder how they managed to cut the list all the way down to 10.
I myself have only read two on the list:
Joshua Ferris‘ THEN WE CAME TO THE END, a most excellent read, if I might say so myself. I’m still smarting that Ferris didn’t win the National Book Award, but since I haven’t read TREE OF SMOKE by Denis Johnson – another book on this list – I guess I’m in no place to judge.
I’m also in the process of reading IMPERIAL LIFE IN THE EMERALD CITY: Inside Iraq’s Green Zone by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, which I’m enjoying immensely (or as much as anyone could while discovering all the ad hoc ways the Iraqi War was put together – but that’s another story for another blog).
I’m not currently running out to get the rest of the books on the list, although MAN GONE DOWN by Michael Thomas has just been added to my TBR pile. It’s the only one on the list I hadn’t heard of – I haven’t decided whether that’s odd or not.

I don’t know if the Ferris book will end up being my number one choice for the year (I really loved “Heart Shaped Box”), but it WILL be in my top ten. It was terrific, and I have you to thank for pointing it out to me. Thanks.
Comment by kookiejar November 30, 2007 @ 2:54 pmI’ve really got to read HEART SHAPED BOX. No thanks needed on the Ferris book. I’ve gotten a great many wonderful reads from your blog. Isn’t it amazing how we discover and come to love books we may not have read otherwise? Since I started blogging, that’s happened more than it used to. That’s why I love it.
